Kerst 2020 – Christmas 2020

I have to post this now, otherwise it will be Spring and Christmas will be even further behind us.
A Christmas that we will all remember around the world because we couldn’t celebrate the way we are used to.
Here in the Netherlands we went into lockdown again the week before Christmas.
When I picked up the paper napkins to set the Christmas table, I immediately put one aside because I had an idea to turn it into an art journal page.
It has become a simple page but it is how we celebrated Christmas 2020.

The paper napkin had the image on one side and upside down on the opposite site.
First I peeled the top layer from the other layers and then I tore the napkin above the trees from the right to the left. I put matt medium all over the page and carefully I put my napkin down to the page.
I also brushed matt medium over the napkin and with the leftover I enlarged the trees and covered the rest of the page that way. I put that aside to dry.

In the meanwhile I die cut the word Christmas in Dutch 4 times as well as my numbers and glued them on top of each other, this gave me dimension in my word and numbers. After they where dry I covered them with VersaMark ink and heat embossed them with gold.
After they cooled, I repeated the process.

I drew my mask on some scrap paper and after some adjustments in the size I transferred this pattern to my cardstock. With some coloured pencil I did some shading and with a pattern stamp and Distress Ink I made it look a little bit more like a real mask.
I printed some Dutch keywords in red related on the situation and fussy cut them to stick on my mask, in the middle the word Corona, clockwise started at the word upper right they translate in Pandemic – Mask – One and a half meter (social distance) – Lockdown.
I had some elastic straps from a real unused mask and glued them on the backside of my mask but only on the top corners.

I splattered some white splashes on to my page, you hardly see them but they are there.
I glued my word and numbers to the page after I had passed my elastic strap through the first letter and the last number. I didn’t put any glue near the place where the strap was. I let that dry overnight with a heavy book on top.
To finish the page I put my mask with some foam tape to the page.

To be able to close the page I stuck a ruler on top of the mask with the thinnest side tight to the middle of the journal the first time I closed it. So now there is a valley fold into my mask while closing the journal.
